Funding for Marine Research in the North Atlantic 2026

Research Council Faroe Islands invites applications for the programme Marine Research in the North Atlantic Ocean - MARiNAO.

The programme is funded by the Danish Government and administered by the Research Council. The aim of the programme is to generate new knowledge on the marine environment in the North Atlantic Ocean and to promote cooperation between Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark on marine research.

The call invites proposals addressing marine processes and ecosystems in the North Atlantic Ocean, with particular emphasis on the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe-Scotland Ridge, the subpolar gyre and the Nordic Seas.

The Arctic and North Atlantic are undergoing rapid climate change, with far-reaching consequences for ocean circulation, marine ecosystems, biodiversity, fisheries, coastal communities, and other ocean-dependent industries. There is a strong need for research that improves our understanding of climate-driven changes in the North Atlantic and their implications for the marine ecosystems.

The North Atlantic is a shared environment that connects Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark, creating both common research interests and opportunities to combine complementary expertise, observations, infrastructure, and knowledge. The call seeks collaborative projects that strengthen scientific cooperation between these countries and generate added value through joint research.

The total budget for this call is up to 15 million DKK. The maximum amount of funding available per project is 5 million DKK. The aim is to fund three projects.

The Call for applications with guidelines and details on conditions is available here.

Applications are to be submitted via the application portal.

The final submission date is 17th March 2027 at 12:00 Faroese time (GMT).

Travel grants

Funding will also be available for travel grants for researchers currently and previously funded by the MARiNAO programme. This may include travelling to relevant conferences to present results in plenary or parallel sessions, participation in panels, and teaching in PhD courses.

600,000 DKK are available for travel grants in 2006/2027. The maximum funding for each application will be 30,000 DKK per person.

The call for applications for travel applications with details on conditions is available here.
